If you have reached this site, you are either a friend of Abino or are
lost.
Assuming the former, you will find pictures, race results and somewhat fictional
accounts of our Wednesday night races out of the West River in Galesville,
Maryland, and some other races as well (CBYRA Bay races, and the inaugural
North American Championship in Annapolis, won by Abino).
Abino (short "i" long "o") is a Beneteau First 36.7
purchased in 2002 as a 50th birthday self-gift in a successful attempt
to avoid a mid-life crisis. The idea was to reverse the decline in sailing
time caused by busy weekends and to meet new friends. Both goals have
been accomplished and by any measure, this rates as among the best decisions
ever made (but on a personal level, still well below marrying Sarah, having
two exceptional kids, Katie and Laney, and getting a Black Lab, Buddy
Bear).
Abino is named after my childhood sailing home, Point Abino, on Lake Erie
(see Links), where I grew up racing first Highlanders and then Lightnings
out of the BCC (the Buffalo Canoe Club - which is actually located in
Bay Beach, Ontario Canada). In addition to new friends from the Chesapeake,
several old friends from the BCC and environs have raced and cruised (OK,
to date only daysailed) on Abino.
Special thanks to Mic and Charlene Osman for taking the pictures and maintaining
this site, and for Mic's research into the meaning of 'Abino' in Italian
(pronounced Abeeno) - loosely translated as "big balls".

Stay tuned - the adventure continues.
Cheers all.
